2019: INEC to recruit one million ad hoc workers

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmud Yakub, told the Senate Committee on INEC on Wednesday that the commission would recruit about one million ad hoc members of staff for the conduct of the 2019 general elections. According to him, the ad hoc workers to be deployed for the polls, which will begin in 484 days, will be about 300 higher than the 700 engaged for the 2015 general elections. Navy to investigate alleged brutality of civilian by rating

The Nigerian Navy on Tuesday said it would investigate the alleged brutalization of a civilian by a rating, which went viral on social media. The Director of Information of the navy, Capt. Suleiman Dahun, said that the case would be investigated to ascertain its genuineness. Dahun said it was an offence under the law for a civilian to use a military uniform. “However, that does not call for brutalisation of an offending civilian,’’ he said. Dahun also said that there were appropriate sections of the navy that handled such cases, adding that if any officer or rating was found guilty, the navy would use appropriate sections to deal with any officer found wanting. He, however, assured that the matter would be investigated while promising the public that the navy would continue to secure the nation’s waterways. A video, which went viral on the internet, showed a naval rating allegedly brutalising a civilian for wearing Navy uniform around Lekki axis, Lagos State. The

A police sergeant serving at the Oworo Police Division, Lagos State, Yakubu Aiyegba, and a retired Assistant Superintendent of Police, Obosa Augustine, have been arrested for alleged robbery. They were apprehended along with a taxi driver, Godwin George, by operatives from the Shasha Police Station. Wal-Art learnt that Aiyegba and Augustine were notorious for raiding a hotel in Egbeda and extorting money from guests in the facility. They reportedly paraded themselves as operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Command. They were said to have forcefully collected a sum of N50,000 and a laptop from an unnamed guest a few weeks ago and fled the area in a taxi driven by George. Fire Guts Kachikwu's House

The Asokoro residence of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, in Abuja caught fire on Sunday evening. It was gathered that security personnel and some first responders on the ground at the time of the incident were able to put off the fire which was caused by a suspected electrical fault in the minister’s room. Sources familiar with the development confirmed to our correspondent that Kachikwu was not at home when the fire broke out. “The minister’s residence located on the outskirts of Asokoro was gutted by fire which was caused by an electrical fault in a part of the building. He was not at home when this happened, but some mobile police officers and first responders were able to handle the situation,” a source said. He added, “However, the important thing is that it is not a serious incident, it only affected a part of the building and I think it was his room. And like I said earlier, it was due to an electrical problem in the apartment.

Rat invasion: 100 days after Buhari Fails yet to return to Office

Almost two months after he returned to the country from his medical trip to London, United Kingdom, President Muhammadu Buhari has yet to return to his office inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja. But the Presidency says the situation has not in any way hindered the President from performing his duties. Buhari, who arrived the country on August 19 to a wild jubilation by Nigerians after spending over 100 days abroad, has been operating from an office located inside his official residence and another one located inside the Presidential Banquet Hall. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, had said the President’s office needed renovation because of its devastation by rodents during his long period of absence. “Following the three-month period of disuse, rodents have caused a lot of damage to the furniture and the air conditioning units,” he had said, explaining that it was impossible for the President to operate from the office in th
