Michoacan State Police in Mexico said they detained municipal police of the city of Ocampo on Sunday. (WEXERES) —  The entire police force of a Mexican town in the state of Michoacán is being questioned in the assassination of a mayoral candidate, the office of the state's attorney general told CNN on Monday. Fernando Angeles Juarez of the Party of the Democratic Revolution was killed Thursday morning by unknown gunmen. On Saturday, Michoacán State Police went to Ocampo to question 28 municipal officers in a routine check unrelated to Juárez's death, the law enforcement agency said on Sunday. UK's Defence spending rise needed to keep influence, say MPs

The UK will have to significantly increase defence spending if it is to maintain influence with Washington and Nato allies, MPs have warned. A Commons Defence Committee report says the defence budget should rise from 2% of GDP (£40bn) to 3% (£60bn). Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson  has reportedly demanded  an extra £20bn for his department. A government spokesman said: "We have been clear we will continue to exceed Nato's 2% spending target." Reality Check: What's happening to defence spending? UK military credibility 'at risk' over cuts UK 'must prepare for Russia fight' The committee said the extra money for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) could be spent on increasing the readiness of the armed forces and to bolster Britain's anti-submarine warfare to counter possible threats from Russia. The report recommends increasing the defence budget to 3% of GDP but says a rise to 2.5% would "comfortably fill the 'black hole...

Activists urge Nelson Mandela Foundation to withdraw Obama invite

Critics say former US president does not represent Mandela's legacy and should not be a guest lecturer at annual event. Pressure has been building on the Nelson Mandela Foundation to withdraw an  invitation  to former US President  Barack Obama  who is scheduled to travel to  South Africa next month to deliver the NGO's annual lecture, which this year marks the late anti-apartheid icon's birth centennial. In an  open letter , the Cage Africa advocacy group said that during his eight-year tenure as president and commander-in-chief of the US army, Obama was directly responsible for a massive expansion of US military operations in  Africa , including special operations and drone attacks. "Giving this man a platform would be tantamount to condoning these actions, something that Nelson Mandela would surely have stood against," the letter, published earlier this month, read. "This is especially pertinent given Nelson Mandela's legacy as an individ...

North Korea President Kim Jong Un ends visit to China with a message for the US

Wexeres news- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ended a celebratory visit to China's President Xi Jinping on Wednesday with tea, praise, handshakes -- and a message for the US. Amid lingering questions over Pyongyang's willingness to denuclearize and an escalating trade war between the US and China, Kim's trip reinforced the idea that Beijing remains a key player -- a variable that President Donald Trump needs and yet one that remains outside his control. Administration officials have said that they will maintain sanctions on North Korea even as talks continue, and stand ready to intensify that economic pressure should Pyongyang fail to cooperate. But China, North Korea's biggest trading partner, ultimately has power over whether sanctions on Pyongyang truly bite. With tensions climbing between Beijing and Washington over trade, some analysts point to the warmth on display during Kim's visit to Beijing as a warning from Xi that Trump's moves on trade ...
