Two Nigerian Air Force jets crash in Abuja

Two aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Air Force have suffered a mishap in the Katampe area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Friday. Our correspondent learnt that the aircraft were taking part in the rehearsals for the 58th Independence Day celebrations when they reportedly collided and a crash was said to have occurred. The number of people injured in the incident could not be ascertained as of the time of this report, as efforts were still ongoing by the military to attend to the situation. The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, who confirmed the incident, said no lives were lost in the mishap. “I wish to confirm an air incident involving two NAF aircraft taking part in the 58th Independence Day celebrations. Thankfully, no lives were lost,” he said.

UPDATED: Buhari approves payment of N22bn to Nigerian Airways retirees

The amount which was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari is about 50 per cent of the N45.3bn entitlements of the former workers of the company. The Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed said this on Monday in Abuja during a press briefing held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Finance. Apart from the N22.8bn for the former aviation workers, she said that the sum of N20bn was approved for the education sector. She said, “Upon my resumption of office as the minister of finance,some pending fiscal issues in the aviation and education sectors were immediately brought to my attention. “As such, I took it as a challenge to quickly address key issues regarding the settlement of existing claims in both of these sectors. “Consequently, upon this, I am happy to inform you that Mr President has graciously approved the sum of N22.68bn and N20bn to aviation and education sectors respectively.” The minister said the initial outstanding retirement benefits due to ex-workers of

FRSC screens 324,000 applicants for 4,000 vacancies

He stated that a bout 400 would be engaged out of the 105,000 university graduates that were taking part in the ongoing screening exercise which he said would hold for four days. Oyeyemi expressed satisfaction with the orderly conduct of the exercise, attributing this to the high number of graduate applicants. The applicants for officers cadre, the FRSC boss said, would be screened on Monday and Tuesday while the screening for other cadres would hold between Thursday and Sunday. President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday expressed sadness over the death of the General Overseer of Soul Winning Chapel, Rev. Moses Iloh. Email scam: Nigerian 'ran ring from Sydney detention centre'

Australian police have charged a man they say was running a multi-million dollar email scam from inside an immigration detention centre in Sydney. The Nigerian man, 43, headed a fraud ring which sent fake messages that claimed to be from trusted companies, according to New South Wales Police. Three other people were charged over the alleged crimes, which included identity theft and romance scams. The alleged ring netted more than A$3m (£1.6; $2.2m), authorities said. The money had been transferred to unknown recipients in Nigeria and was unlikely to be recovered, said Supt Arthur Katsogiannis. The scam was allegedly run through 16 phones and 17 SIM cards out of Sydney's Villawood Immigration Detention Centre.
