JUST IN: Court Orders INEC To Resume Voter Registration

Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately resume Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) until 90 days before the 2023 general elections. Delivering Judgement, Justice Ekwo also directed INEC to ensure that eligible Nigerians are not deprived the opportunity to have the voters’ cards for the forthcoming poll. He held that it was the constitutional responsibility of the electoral umpire to make adequate provision for the exercise in accordance with the Nigerian laws. One Anajat Salmat and three others had sued INEC arguing that the electoral body cannot stop the voter registration contrary to the stipulated provisions of the constitution They urged the court to order the electoral umpire to resume the exercise in accordance with the law of the country. Ministry requests $8.92m World Bank loan for stationery, others

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed The Home Finance Department of the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning has requested about $8.93m from the World Bank to procure 21 items, which included office stationery, office furniture, office supplies, office equipment, and vehicles. The requests were made under the State Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability project, which was initiated in 2018. The SFTAS project was designed to strengthen transparency and accountability at the sub-national level, and will end this year. A total of $1.5bn was committed to the project in two batches of $750m (December 2018 and December 2020) by the World Bank. Although the money is a grant to state governments, it is a loan to the Federal Government. A copy of the procurement plan for the project covering a period from February 2019 to August 2020 was recently obtained by our correspondent. Nigerian soldier runs amok, kills colleague, aid worker, injures UN co-pilot

A soldier of the 25 Task Force Brigade in Borno ran amok on Thursday and shot a female humanitarian aid worker to death while injuring a UN pilot. He also shot and killed another soldier. Reports said he would have taken more lives, but for the quick intervention of his colleagues who killed him. Reacting to the incident, the Theatre Command of “Operation HADIN KAI’’, expressed regret at the sad occurrence at one of its military bases. The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Samson Zhakom, said the soldier shot and killed a staff member of one of the NGOs providing humanitarian support in the Northeast. “Same soldier also killed another soldier and injured the co-pilot of one of the UN helicopters. Adesanya arrested in US over metal knuckles

Former UFC middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya, has reportedly been arrested for taking brass knuckles through security and John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. The 33-year-old, who lost his title by TKO to Alex Pereira in New York last Saturday, was arrested by Port Authority police in the American Airlines terminal on Wednesday. According to a report on Daily Mail, a Port Authority spokesperson at the John F. Kennedy Airport in New York confirmed the arrest, saying Adesanya was booked for possessing ‘metal knuckles.’ Brass knuckles are a Class A misdemeanor in New York, and it is also illegal to bring them aboard an airplane. It’s not clear where Adesanya allegedly stored the weapon. Spokespeople from the UFC are yet to react to the incident. A video has surfaced showing an American, Shanquella Robinson, 25, who was on a trip to Mexico being beaten up by another lady, moments before she was declared dead.  Robinson, whose name has emerged as one of the top trends on the Internet on Thursday was seen being beaten while naked in a new video from the trip she took with friends. Her friends had claimed she died from alcohol poisoning, reports Daily Mail. One of Robinson's friends called her parents to tell them she was unwell and claimed that she was intoxicated with alcohol. A doctor eventually showed up at the villa and attempted to revive Robinson before declaring her dead at 3:00 p.m. local time An autopsy report that was obtained by Robinson's parents indicates her neck was broken. Ensure manifesto implementation, Chinese envoy tells parties

The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Cui Jianchun, on Wednesday, advised political parties to work more on implementing their manifestos rather than just saying it. Jianchun spoke at a seminar on ‘The 20th National Congress of COC: Outcomes and significance for Nigeria and Africa’ held in Abuja. Guns-ladened car intercepted at Osun court gate

A car carrying some persons and guns was reportedly intercepted at the entrance to the premises of Osun State High Court on Wednesday. The incident happened while the tribunal hearing the petition from the July 16 Osun Governorship Election had commenced sitting for the day. Owing to the tribunal sitting, security men were stationed at the entrance to the premises conducting checks on vehicles going into the compound. An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, said the vehicle allegedly carrying the guns was intercepted while making its way into the venue. China has finally unveiled its ‘YJ-21,’ or the ‘Eagle Strike 21’ shipborne hypersonic anti-ship missile that has long been shrouded in mystery. The missile has been put on display at the ongoing Zhuhai Air Show. The homegrown YJ-21 missile is known to be the world’s first carrier-based anti-ship ballistic missile. The missile was displayed alongside the two Tianlei (TL) series air-to-surface anti-ship missiles. It was marked as ‘YJ-21E’, in which the ‘E’ appears to indicate the export variant of the missile. Chinese VLS cells can accommodate missiles up to nine meters long, with a diameter of 850 millimeters, so the YJ-21 must be within these parameters. The YJ-21 is believed to have been developed from the Chinese CM-401 short-range hypersonic anti-ship ballistic missile unveiled at the Zhuhai Air Show 2018. Fake mentally challenged man caught with sack filled with dead babies

ON Sunday the 6th of Novemeber, 2022, a mob descended on a man adjudged to have feigned a mental illness after he was caught with a bag filled with dead babies. The yet-to-be identified man was caught along Cele Expressway, Lagos. Bank customers lament ‘illegal’ withdrawals, demand urgent action

Some bank customers of various banks in the country have lamented the increasing spate of ‘illegal’ withdrawals from their accounts. Some of the customers who were victims of the act said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday. Imo gas plant attendants allegedly kill and bury their colleague in an attempt to steal company money

A 22-year-old woman, identified as Joy Uchechi Nwachukwu, has allegedly been killed by her colleagues in an attempt to steal the company’s money. Joy Uchechi, who until her death worked as an accounting officer in a gas plant located in Imo State, is said to have gone to work on Monday, October 24, and that was the last she was seen. Her family raised alarm when they didn’t hear from her or see her at the end of the work day, and her coworkers were unable to provide any information about her whereabouts. The family members, led by one pastor, Mrs. Precious Abara, reported the case to the state’s police command, and officers sprung into action. It was gathered that during the investigation, police discovered a shallow grave on the premises of the gas plant and exhumed Uchechi’s body.
