The House of Representatives has declared a national emergency on the increasing spate of ritual killings. The Green Chambers asked the Inspector General of Police to bring to book all those involved in the act. The House also asked the Nigeria Film and Video Censors Board to increase monitoring of videos produced with ritual killing contents and ensure that such contents are deleted in line with its mandate. Adopting a motion of urgent public importance by Deputy Minority Leader, Toby Okechukwu, the House asked the National Orientation Agency (NOA), the media, school owners and parents to carry out enlightenment campaignS with a view to curbing the rising cases of ritual killings in the country. Five soldiers died on Tuesday while others were critically injured after a MRAP (mine-resistant, ambush protected vehicle) in which they were travelling had an accident in Anambra State. A young girl was rescued from jumping into the lagoon outward Iyana Oworo end of the bridge by officials of Rapid Response Squad (RR S) on patrol of 3rd Mainland Bridge, on Thursday. The teenager who was restrained by the officers from committing suicide by jumping into the lagoon in a conversation revealed that “I was beaten at home, that is why I ran away to commit suicide.” The officers’ attention was said to have been drawn to the lady by a dispatch rider before racing to the scene to restrain her from jumping into the lagoon. She has been conveyed to Iyana Oworo Police division, where efforts are in progress to contact family members. A police helicopter which took off from Abuja has crashed at the Bauchi Airport, the Accident Investigation Bureau said on Thursday. No fewer than 59 passengers in a fully loaded bus belonging to the Bus Rapid Transport scheme sustained varying degrees of injury on Tuesday when the vehicle collided with a Dangote cement truck on Ikorodu Road, Lagos State. A female passenger, was, however, unlucky as she lost her life in the crash which occurred at the Ogolonto end of the road. The Director General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the accident was caused by the brake failure of the truck, which was loaded with cement. He noted that the agency’s assets/medical unit worked with sister agencies to ease vehicular movement and ensure swift recovery of the truck.
