Ranieri may drop Troost-Ekong after penalty blunder

William Troost-Ekong may lose his spot in Watfordā€™s defence after he conceded a late penalty in Hornetā€™s 2-1 away loss at Brentford on Friday, WEXERES Sports Extra reports.

A clumsy Troost-Ekong challenge on Saman Ghoddos handed the Bees a penalty in the final minute of added time which was coolly slotted home by Bryan Mbeumo ā€“ an error that cost Watford a point and saw them lose a fourth straight league game.

And Ranieri who was left frustrated by Troost-Ekongā€™s error revealed he will meet with the defender ahead of the Hornets clash against Burnley.

The Nigerian had also made a mistake in Watfordā€™s recent 4-2 loss at Leicester.

ā€œI have to see if there are some players ready to play. Because my defensive line is not ready to play, because Christian Kabasele wasnā€™t ready. Francisco Sierralta isnā€™t ready. I have to see,ā€ Ranieri said.

ā€œWe missed a short pass. So then put the ball out of the stadium. Then the penalty ā€“ if Willie (Troost-Ekong) had just stayed calm and followed him until the end but thatā€™s it, thatā€™s football, you have to concentrate 100 per cent until the end.ā€

ā€œNow we will see everything, I will speak with Troost-Ekong before our next game against Burnley.ā€œ

I was frustrated, but my mind is on the next match. We know we are in a relegation battle. It is important to react immediately. We have to be stronger and be ready for the battle.

Ranieri also added that he does not believe his defendersā€™ problems are psychological but adds that whoever plays against Burnley in midweek simply has to be stronger than those who played against Brentford.

ā€œI donā€™t know if itā€™s psychological because Watford came in the Premier League this season and itā€™s normal to be in relegation battle,ā€ he added.

ā€œWe knew that and we have to react, we have to play stronger than. There will be another battle in a few days.ā€

Troost-Ekong has made 15 EPL appearances so far this term and the Hornets are yet to keep a clean sheet with the Nigerian in action.
