Four soldiers from Myoung Barracks in the Morocco area of Shomolu, Lagos, are feared dead, while several others sustained injuries after a suspected drunk driver crashed into them.
WEXERES News gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday during the soldiers' routine monthly road jog outside the barracks.
An eyewitness, Priscilla, who resides in the area, told our correspondent that a Toyota vehicle carrying three young men was speeding before it lost control and plowed into the soldiers.
She recounted that after the crash, the occupants of the vehicle attempted to flee but were caught by bystanders, who beat them severely and vandalized their car. According to her, one of the young men was stabbed during the altercation.
“The accident happened this morning while the soldiers were on their monthly road walk. The car, carrying three young men, rammed into them right in front of the barracks," Priscilla said.
"Four soldiers lost their lives, and many others were seriously injured. After the incident, the young men tried to escape but were apprehended and brutally beaten. Their vehicle was also vandalized, and one of them was stabbed.”
She added that the incident has left residents in a state of panic.
As of the time of filing this report, the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Olabisi Ayeni, and the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, had yet to respond to messages seeking comments.
